Just when I started to fizzle on the whole Twitter thing (my personal account anyway), along comes an article on why I should be on it. Ray Weikel, publications and communications specialists at International Association of Administrative Professionals (IaAAP), writes about Why Twitter is Worth It in the latest edition of IAAP OfficePro Express.
The best reason is that as our job descriptions expand to include new tasks, Twitter can become a valuable news feed, providing a fast and efficient way to find experts who can guide you through any new challenge. You need only to take some time to find people in those areas you need help and follow them. Then take a few minutes each day to sort through posts. Ray also suggests using a clipping application like Evernote to save articles for later reading.
Association volunteers can benefit from this advice especially because they are often asked to perform tasks outside their skill sets, tasks that can at times seem daunting. Using Twitter as a quick resource can go a long way to help many of these volunteers succeed.
BTW: This piece was also on the IAAP LinkedIn group, proof once again that LinkedIn can be also be a valuable place to connect and interact with colleagues. Guess I’m just going to have to get over my social media phobias once and for all!
