We can’t change a committee charge…or can we?

Working with an association pro, we began talking about what makes an effective volunteer committee/work group charge (a topic that we covered at our July 7th workshop on mastering your volunteer liaison role).

The 1st step? Be specific about goals and outcomes. True, we most frequently inherit a committee charge without the option to edit. And more charges we inherit are descriptive or process goals (step/action need to be achieved) versus outcome-based goals (measurable results/impacts).

Why we often can’t change the initial charge, we can identify the outcome-based goals for the group which align with the organization’s mission and strategic plan. This helps committees have the greatest impact where it matters the most.
