Data Drives Good Decisions – #Chessie14 offers a look at 3 Research Studies

For anyone who’s earned their APR or successfully won a Silver Anvil, Best in Maryland or any PR award, you know that research at the front end and evaluation at the end are “do not skip” steps. Of course following metrics and be aware of research throughout any PR campaign or project is also critical.
All this points to why the 2014 PRSA Maryland Chesapeake Conference, June 12, has included research in its day-long program.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore data and talk about how to make sense of it and use it in their work. Through three studies, we’ll share how the communication industry is adapting, how PR professionals are leading, and how consumers are connecting. The three studies we’re sharing are:

  1. Annual Communications Industry Survey of the Washington, DC and Baltimore markets. Conducted by Capitol Communicator and WBA Research, this study shines a light on perceptions of current and future economic conditions, the rating of the business climate, perceptions of current and future company performance, and future staffing needs among hiring managers. Last year, questions on social media usage and attitudes were added to the study. WBA’s Renee Henley and representatives from Capitol Communicator will share the findings and lead a discussion in our opening session.
  2. Loyola University Social Media & PR Study. Conducted through as part of Loyola’s exciting new M.A. in Emerging Media program, this study shares how PR pros are integrating social media into PR. Dr. Elliot King, chair of the Communication Department at Loyola University Maryland, will lead a break-out session with students – who are PR professionals – to share results and discuss the challenges of recognizing new media as — and even before — it emerges and developing effective strategies to responsibly maximize its potential. (PS – there’s still chance to participate in the study!)
  3. Seniors & News Consumption. Conducted by Charlestown & Erickson Living, this study of 2,000 seniors (born in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s) dives into how they use technology and social media (any you may be surprised!). This rare first-hand perspective, moderated by Erickson Living Public Affairs Manager Mel Tansill, will include will include a panel of residents from the nearby retirement community who will discuss how they’ve adapted to the different ways of receiving news during their lifetimes. This morning break-out session.
